Support for Managers

Northwestern places a strong emphasis on supporting both employees and their managers in navigating the intricacies of leaves of absence, particularly during life-changing events like pregnancy and parenthood. We recognize that effective management extends beyond day-to-day tasks and encompasses the well-being and life transitions of our valued team members.

Managers should familiarize themselves with the different types of leaves of absence and the resources offered at Northwestern for parents and other caregivers. When an employee discloses a pregnancy, managers should congratulate the employee and let the employee know of the resources and support available for prospective and current parents, if they would like. The HR Well-being team is available for both individual new parent consultations and manager consultations on supporting new parents, including help in navigating the employee’s transition to and from leave.
