Haifei Wang

Feinberg

I want to express my overflowing gratitude to Haifei Wang, Director of Research Administration in the Department of Medical Social Sciences. Through ups and downs of our team in the grants management process, Haifei's stellar skills, calm manner and broad shoulders have seen us through impeccably. She always show up with generosity and grace! She knows so much! We trust her deeply. When the going gets rough, Haifei gets going! No where was this more evident than on a very stressful P50 submission. We are poised to receive it, and Haifei had a big hand in that. We are so appreciative of all she does to ensure a smooth, efficient and effective grants management process in MSS. SHOUT OUT! to our wonderful Haifei.”

Yasmeen Sultana Khan

Office for Research

Yasmeen Khan has been a part of our office for almost two years, but in that time they've made a huge impact. I'm honored to award her with the IRB Office Marvel Superhero award for the month of March. This month's superhero has not only the ability of identifying ways to improve our work, but also the patience, knowledge, and drive to see things through. I've lost count of how many times this person has identified a gap in a process and then gone ahead and made that process even better than before, volunteered to help others with an initiative or an event and then been a key factor in its success, taken on a complicated task and executed it with precision and expertise, and offered her support for others by sharing innovative and creative solutions. It is inspiring to see this month's superhero harness their talents and bring about positive change. Thank you Yasmeen for bringing a fresh perspective to our work and for leading so many positive changes.”

Evelyn was able to provide her previously scheduled session a week later and offered additional resources to the affinity group. Evelyn is a fantastic person. Aziza successfully led a special behind the scenes educational experience for members of Northwestern's Osher Life Long Learning Institute around the Wirtz Center's recent production of WORKING. This three part study group included a robust agenda, tour and opening night performance complete with a special talkback for OLLI members. Not only did Aziza coordinate all aspects of the sessions including scheduling and liaising with staff, students and faculty, but she led all logistics including smartly moving one in person session to virtual to accommodate inclement weather. Upshot: All post event surveys were glowing and many first time participants and attendees said they'd be back for future offerings. Sherry recently helped me with some technical issues I was encountering with myHR. She worked closely with me over the course of three days to try to determine the root of the issue and work towards a resolution. Katherine Mustea

Feinberg

I have known Kathy Mustea for some years, perhaps presenting at a meeting or reaching out to her for help on grants. However, in the last 1 1/2 years, I have been fortunate to fall under her team for advice on Training Grants. She is my go-to person for questions I have on T32s. Training grants are particularly different than any other grant, and it takes time to understand the intricacies. Currently, I oversee 5 T32s and an R25, and Kathy has been exceptionally helpful. She is knowledgeable, personable, approachable, patient, and humorous; sometimes I know the answer but still ask her because I might have pushbacks, and she smiles and says: "Give them the NIH recipe... that's all." She takes the time to explain processes, leads, and shares tools and policies to understand and become a better steward of the awards. I owe Kathy a lot of the knowledge I have on training grants. Despite her heavy workload and shortage of staff, she always finds time to talk and train people like me. This aspect of her as a leader in ASRSP cannot go unnoticed. I take the time today to say how much I appreciate people like Kathy who walk the extra mile to teach what she knows. There are no words to express my gratitude to a delightful colleague who is providing such a great contribution to Northwestern in guiding others to be better T32 managers. "Kathy, thank you for sharing your knowledge with me."”

Mike Maloney

Safety and Security Administration

Safely moving 200 minors, and the vehicles they arrive and depart campus in, is a process that requires thoughtful planning and communication. Throughout the spring, Mike has been an amazing partner for me and my colleagues at CTD. He helped us develop a safe, efficient plan for getting our families in and out of campus at high traffic-times, and then he helped us do that AGAIN in a highly compressed timeline when we had a bit of a wrench thrown into the original plan. At every meeting we've had in the last several weeks, Mike has been professional, supportive, understanding, a good listener, and a remarkable problem solver. Our concerns and needs were heard and validated every step of the way. When we all had to turn on a dime and reconfigure our plans, Mike was quick to provide additional support by developing signage and providing on-the-ground assistance for our families. When your job is stressful (even for all the right reasons), you need good people in the trenches with you. Mike has been very, very good people, and we are grateful to have had him in the trenches with us throughout these last several weeks.”

Facilities

On behalf of the Searle Center for Advancing Learning and Teaching, we wish to express our sincere appreciation for the excellent work done by Timothy Downing, Walter Stevenson, Justin McCray, Joel Alanis, Brian Scott Smith, and the entire crew. We would also like to express our appreciation for Josh from Reebie Movers and the rest of his crew for the help they provided with moving all the building furniture which contributed to making this large project go smoothly. Our building at 627 Dartmouth Place was in need of a top to bottom refresh. This facilities team worked with our entire staff to select carpet, paint, and kitchen upgrades with extraordinary patience and attention to detail. Repeatedly they told us that they were just doing their job, but we are writing to say that they went above and beyond in helping us problem solve and to create a space where we are proud to welcome guests for gatherings that promote community. We appreciate their skill, their care, and their careful stewardship of Northwestern University resources to ensure that our building meets the University standard of quality. They consistently followed up during the projects to make sure the results met our expectations and did not hesitate to make a change if we requested it. While there are still remaining projects to do, we are pausing to reflect on just how far the projects have come with the help of our colleagues in facilities. It has been a tremendous morale booster for all of us at the center and they have all been a pleasure to work with.”

On behalf of the Searle Center for Advancing Learning and Teaching, we wish to express our sincere appreciation for the excellent work done by Christine Swenson, Amber London, Albert Bautista, Nimisha Joshi, and the entire team of website developers in the creation of our excellent new website. They have all been a pleasure to work with throughout this entire process. We especially appreciate their step-by-step guidance which helped us navigate the complexities and the comprehensive review which ensured an accessible user experience. As our primary contact, Christine was integral to helping make our vision for the website a reality. For instance, when we expressed ideas about what we wanted, she would quickly mockup examples to show us our different options. When an idea was not feasible, we appreciated her thoughtful explanations, careful listening, and incisive recommendations. Her partnership turned a complex process into an enjoyable one, ultimately creating a website that exceeded our expectations. Additionally, we want to thank Nimisha Joshi for hosting special training sessions for our staff and creating a valuable reference guide. While we know that the website will always be a work in progress, we are pausing to reflect on the dramatic difference that this completely reimagined website is having on our ability to communicate with the Northwestern community. Rozelle Copeland

Office for Research

In the IRB Office on a monthly basis we recognize a Marvel Superhero. This month's Superhero has been a part of our office for just six months and in that time they've made a huge impact. I've lost count of how many times this person has identified a gap in a process and then gone ahead and fixed it, or notified a document was missing key language and added, or noticed something in need of an update that many of us previously overlooked. This month's superhero has not only the ability of identifying ways to improve our work, but also the patience, knowledge, and drive to see things through. I know I can't be the only one who has a knack for starting things and not finishing them (cough cough the irb members website project) and it is inspiring to see this month's superhero harness their talents and bring about positive change. Thank you Rozelle for bringing a fresh perspective to our work and for leading so many positive changes. Congratulations Rozelle for being this month's Marvel Superhero!”

I want to recognize this team for the incredible work they've done over fiscal year end. Not only did they continue to serve the campus community to the highest degree of professionalism and dedication, but their determination and drive directly resulted in a successful audit and completion of the published financial statements. They continuously adjust to meet the needs of the University and to support each other, personally and professionally. I have been on the receiving end of this support during the ups and downs of raising a toddler and infant as a working mom and I am so grateful to work with such a kind, passionate, and overall amazing team. You make working at Northwestern a joy. Thank you!”

In early June, Bridget and I started our positions on the same day at NUCATS. As newbies, we toured the office together, went through the rigmarole of setting up laptops, have grown into our roles, and have continued to chat in the office kitchen - updating one another on our parallel work journeys. We are on different teams that work together, so Bridget and I collaborate, and it's been great to accomplish projects with her. I will always remember that we started on the same day, and I look forward to the both of achieving professional milestones alongside each other, in 2023 and beyond. She handled the call by providing empathy as well providing information explaining the university policy. Just observing her, I could tell she was focusing more on solving the problem. Dr. Julie Collins

Medill

Dr. Julie Collins, Assistant Dean at Medill Graduate Admissions & Financial Aid, has been an example of inclusive leadership, inspiration and empowerment as she just finished her PhD degree but also in the challenges, opportunities and supports that Dr. Collins provides to her team. It can be in the form of professional development opportunities, including encouraging me to apply for the NASPA -Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education APIDA Leadership Academy. As it is a national program, I wasn't sure if I was well qualified. However with encouragement and support, I applied and was accepted to the program which I wouldn't have initiated if it wasn't for Dr. Collins. Dr. Collins continues to be a leader in the higher education community as recently featured on a panel for NAGAP - Higher Education Enrollment earlier this year. With inclusivity on mind, she is focused on creating and developing a safe space for employee growth (which includes taking risks and making mistakes) and development, with a strong focus on customer service and engagement with all parts of our community - colleagues, faculty, students, alumni, and more!”

Pranjal Patankar

Office for Research

I’d like to recognize Pranjal Patankar as an exemplary colleague and leader. Pranjal is smart, kind, curious, supportive, and always willing to help anyone in the IRB Office, The research community, and the Office for Research with wise guidance and sound advice. Pranjal always stands out to me when challenging questions or situations arise. She explores resources, reads guidance, and devours policy. She is a wealth of knowledge and is always willing to share her knowledge, but also inspires others to be curious and take the time to seek out answers through guidance and policy references. Like most of us, Pranjal has a very full plate, yet, she always takes time for a kind word, participates in special projects, leadership activities, and is willing to support others. She has impacted the way I work and emulates the ways I try to treat others. As I re-read this so far, I realize I could be writing this about the majority of people in the IRB Office, and for that I’m so very grateful. This is a remarkable group and they inspire me daily. Thanks to the IRB Office team for your teamwork, empathy, wisdom and support. I’m grateful to be a part of the IRB and for the ways Pranjal and others demonstrate the NU and OR values. Recently, we welcomed a new IRB Analyst from the Biomedical IRB Team to the Social and Behavioral IRB Office. Pranjal was supportive, transparent, and always wanted to encourage this individual’s personal growth and future goals. Pranjal’s work ethic has created a supportive environment and is committed to making the IRB run efficient as possible. This is the way I want to lead, support, and befriend my colleagues and I’m so thankful for our leadership who emulate and foster such respect for all of us and our future aspirations. I would like to extend my gratitude and respect to Pranjal and will continue to work in following her example. Gail Ivanauskas

School of Education and Social Policy

Even among a (small) sea of incredibly smart, capable, dedicated staff, Gail stands out. In her role as Senior Financial Administrator for Center for Talent Development, Gail is tasked with knowing SO MANY things, and engaging with SO MANY individuals both within the organization, as well as with individuals at other NU departments. It is mind-boggling to consider all of the details she has to hold in her brain (and in her files). Despite this, Gail is never anything but pleasant and committed. When high level changes need to occur, she brings the right people to the table to consider all the viewpoints before enacting a plan. When CTD staff have questions in the realm of minutia, she answers (or finds the answers) swiftly, and treats every inquiry as valid. From hiring and payroll to budgets and forecasting to ensuring our students have the supplies they need to engage with our classes, Gail manages it all. She puts in more hours than she should, and I am fortunate to call her my colleague. Thank you, Gail, for all you do for all of us EVERY DAY.”

Braden Van Buskirk

Braden Van Buskirk has provided phenomenal leadership to the IRB Office for many years now. One of the things I love most about Braden is that no-matter how crummy of a day it’s been, he is always the first person to make a joke or share a self-deprecating story to lighten the mood in a meeting. More importantly though, Braden always has his team’s back, always asking us what we need from him. Braden demonstrates amazing emotional awareness for his team, always willing to talk through issues with honesty and openness, ensuring things don’t fester. It’s clear that he cares about his team as people and is interested in what we want in our careers. He’s not just our manager but a mentor in many ways as well. On a daily basis he demonstrates all the qualities of a great leader and sets an amazing tone in the office. Expressing heartfelt gratitude for the extraordinary commitment and skill of Bill Patti, Haifei Wang and the supporting MSS RA team of Katie Lambert, Jodie Hoks and Lauren Kapinski in our recent P50 submission. Due to a number of unforeseen circumstances and several staffing issues, we had many obstacles and were at risk of missing the deadline for this $12 million submission. Stepping in light to "save the day" as RA team leader, Bill showed exceptional talent, knowledge, skill and fortitude in guiding us towards submission, always with a smile and sense of humor and calm demeanor. Without a doubt, we could not have made this deadline without Bill's outstanding contribution. Haifei's skill and generosity in going above and beyond as RA team leader also made a huge contribution and she did so unstintingly and calmly even as gaps arose and pressure mounted. When things got very tight, Haifei and Bill called in the RA SWAT team of Katie, Lauren and Jody who were so nimble and so devoted in filling in the gaps and helping us get over the finish line. We are very blessed with this talented, committed and skillful MSS RA team. its the "can do" attitude combined with skill and an attitude of "all hands on deck" that helps us be bold and ambitious in our goals. Marla Block

Feinberg

I worked with Marla Block for a little over one year, sharing various administrative duties for the division of Infectious Diseases. I quickly became very fond of Marla, learning that she cares deeply about the well-being of her coworkers. She was the single biggest resource to me when I joined the staff, sharing her 7+ years of experience with NU and gracefully putting up with my multitude of questions. She dedicated a great deal of time in my first few months of employment with NU to provide thorough training which helped me be successful. Marla understands the importance of training for both the incoming staff member and the current employees. Without her training efforts, I would have struggled and been far less helpful to her and the rest of the division. In her work, Marla is incredibly thorough and meticulous. She takes her job very seriously without losing sight of the big picture. Because the administrative staff in the ID division is small, she regularly handles a heavy workload and prioritizes well. She is immensely respectful of other people’s work loads and always does what she can to help. Marla puts in effort to get to know her coworkers, remembering things about their lives and sharing things about her own life which naturally builds trust and fosters a respectful and congenial work environment. I will miss her enthusiasm and sense of humor. She has been with NU for upwards of seven years and I think it’s high time she was recognized and promoted. I wish her all the best and will miss working with her.”

I've had a lot of managers in my career and worked with a lot of leaders within my community, but working with you, I have both a great leader and manager. I am so appreciative to have a young, talented, intelligent, and energetic manager and leader that values diversity, personal and professional growth and development. I observe you strive to be the best at everything you do with compassion, sense of urgency and dignity. Your ability to train me both remotely and onsite for my position is unmatched - you have so much patience, take the time to make audio visuals for training purposes, and push me to step out of my comfort zone, and so much more. You are a true leader and and a developing manager with much potential. You are a great asset to the department and Northwestern University is lucky to have you as a staff.”

ASAG (APIDA Staff Affinity Group) Leadership Team

Other

I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the ASAG (APIDA Staff Affinity Group) leadership team, Ginger, Michele, Jason, Tia, Puja. Not only have they been able to bring ASAG back into a space where we have been able to host events (in person and virtual), they are continually thinking deeply about the community and meeting them where they are at. You all have cultivated a brave and courageous space where members can have dialogue, share stories, while allowing connection to happen. Thanks for allowing me to be on this journey with you all.”

Tas Uting

Feinberg

I just want to acknowledge what an amazing leader Tas Uting has been for the Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine Division over the past couple years. With all of the changes that the pandemic forced upon us, she has been nothing but encouraging, empathetic, and fearless for all of us. She leads with determination and conviction, and somehow also remains down-to-earth and loyal to her team in the face of any challenge. I always smile when I see her in the office, and her quick wit, humor, and warmth are a breath of fresh air when the world feels too heavy. Thank you for all you do for us, Tas!”

Kevin Allen and Allison Osmer

Feinberg

Kevin and Allison are great colleagues - always willing to answer my all of my random questions and save me a lot of stress and time. They also covered for me while I was on maternity leave and I could have that special time with my family, while knowing my faculty were being supported. Allison has recently left the department but still is a great support to me. I am so grateful for them and for all they do! Thank you both!!!”
