What is pet insurance?

Similar to health insurance for you and your family, pet insurance is coverage for dogs and cats that can help you be prepared for unexpected vet costs.

How does pet insurance work?

Take your pet to the vet and pay the bill, then send your claim to MetLife. You can file by using their mobile app, online portal, email, fax or mail, and they will process your claim within 10 days. Then, you’ll receive reimbursement by check or direct deposit if the claim expense is covered under the policy.  Contact MetLife at 800 GET-MET8 for more information.

What is the premium for pet insurance?

Premiums are based on breed and zip code.  MetLife will bill you directly for premiums.  There will not be any payroll deductions. Contact MetLife directly at 800 GET-MET8 for more information.

Will the premiums be deducted from my paycheck?

No, you will not have payroll deductions. MetLife will bill you directly.

Are only dogs and cats covered?

Yes, the benefit only applies to dogs and cats.  None of the leading national carriers that offer employer group plans covered additional types of animals.

When does coverage start?

Accident coverage and wellness coverage (for those who select it) begin on the effective date of your policy. Illness coverage begins 14 days later. Contact MetLife at 800 GET-MET8 for more information.

Can I visit any vet?

You can visit any licensed vet or emergency clinic in the U.S., and you and your veterinarian of choice can determine the best treatment plan and medical course of action for your pet. Once you’ve received and paid your bill, send it to MetLife and they will process your claim for reimbursement if the claim expense is covered under the policy.

Why did Northwestern select MetLife as the carrier?

After a through request for proposal process it was decided that MetLife was able to provide the highest level of benefits, best discount, and responsive customer service for our community.

Do I need to live in the US to enroll?

Yes, this benefit is only allowed in select states within the US.  Contact MetLife at 800 GET-MET8 for more information.

What does it not cover?

Pre-existing conditions may not be covered. Routine care and wellness is only covered when you purchase the Preventive Care coverage. Contact MetLife at 800 GET-MET8 for more information.

How can I have my questions or concerns addressed?

Contact MetLife 800 GET-MET8 directly for all customer service questions. 

What happens to my coverage when I leave the University or retire?

You should MetLife at 800 GET-MET8 to inform them you are no longer a Northwestern faculty or staff member.  They will remove the preferred pricing for your plan.
