Northwestern makes me feel like I’m part of a greater good. I feel like I belong, which is why I’ve been in Northwestern IT for 33 years.”
Maureen Veronica Knight-Burrell
Director, Information Technology

With a fascinating career journey spanning the Atlantic, Maureen Veronica Knight-Burrell transitioned from London’s banking industry to Northwestern. Despite the change in industry, Maureen has always been in the field of information technology, stating, “I was STEM before there was STEM.”
Maureen was drawn to Northwestern by her desire “to learn everything about everything and share what I learn.” Maureen has taken countless courses, spearheaded many programs and earned a master of science in computer information systems from the McCormick School of Engineering, and she is still continuing her learning journey. Northwestern has become a home away from home for Maureen. “Northwestern makes me feel like I’m part of a greater good,” she says. “I feel like I belong, which is why I’ve been in Northwestern IT for 33 years.”
Maureen highlights the abundance of resources and benefits available for staff, from professional development to well-being programs, and staff organizations such as the ANUW mentoring program, the Women’s Center and the International Relations Office. She also emphasizes the value of the Navigating Cultures in the Global Workplace program, offered by the Office of the Vice President for International Relations. Through this program, Maureen had the opportunity to travel to Cape Town, South Africa, with a cohort of Northwestern colleagues.
